The lead teacher at Maui Economic Opportunity’s Head Start preschool site
at Wailuku Elementary School, Sheila Yamamoto, was named the nonprofit
organization’s Employee of the Month for February.
Her nominator, Family Case Manager Kalena Brown, cited her resiliency,
especially in the face of staffing challenges.
“She continues to share her knowledge, patience and unconditional love for
those around her, especially our littles,” said Kalena.
Sheila has been nurturing 3- and 4-year-olds in the preschool program since
December 2017 with a short stint away in 2020-21. Head Start provides
preschool at no cost to income qualifying children and their families. The
program works with the family, engaging parents in the education of their
children and offering assistance with basic needs and parenting.
