The Maui County Planning & Coordinating Council of kupuna clubs met for the first time since the Aug. 8 wildfires on Wednesday and were introduced to Maui Economic Opportunity’s new P&CC coordinator, Virginia Chapman.

About 30 leaders of kupuna clubs gathered at MEO in Wailuku along with a handful via livestream for the meeting. The Council, made up of leaders from more than 50 senior clubs countywide, had chosen to cancel meetings in August and September out of respect and empathy for those impacted by the tragedy, which included senior club members and their families.

Lianne Peros-Busch and Jaimie Dukelow of the MEO Business Development Center gave a presentation on scams and fraud with lots of interaction from the members. Officers were nominated for next year with voting to take place at the next meeting.

The P&CC works to enhance the independence and quality of life of kupuna through education, companionship and improved health. The program assists senior clubs with recruitment, advocacy, education and social events.

It was the first meeting for Virginia, who started earlier this month. Prior to joining MEO, she worked for about eight years with the Maui County Office on Aging and 17 years in the rental car industry with Dollar Car Rental.

Virginia brings her experiences with the Office on Aging and in real-life as a caregiver for her Mom to the P&CC Coordinator job. “I want to be an advocate for seniors,” said Virginia, a mother of two and grandmother of eight.
