Maui Economic Opportunity Chief Administrative Officer Maggie Batangan earned her Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Certified Professional credential and joined the ranks of a worldwide organization dedicated to creating better workplaces.
SHRM members are experts, researchers, advocates and thought leaders on issues and innovations impacting workplaces. With nearly 340,000 members in 180 countries, SHRM touches the lives of more than 362 million workers and their families globally.
Preparation for the exam included 40 hours of classroom instruction through the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College and months-long study with other human resources professionals in Hawai‘i. Instructors for the preparation courses included the top HR experts in Hawai‘i and across the nation.
Class sessions also covered study of the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK) competency framework.
The SHRM exam is four hours long and includes 134 questions (80 knowledge items and 54 situational-judgment items). The test questions cover employment law, interpersonal communication, workforce management, organization and leadership.
Maggie took and passed the SHRM exam on Oahu on June 7.
“We are so proud of Maggie for joining the ranks of SHRM,” said CEO Debbie Cabebe, a SHRM-SCP member herself. “The journey to her SHRM-CP will be invaluable as the head of the MEO’s Human Resources Department.”
Maggie joined MEO in January as Chief Administrative Officer. As the head of HR, she focuses on contract compliance, talent and change management, organizational and performance management, training and development, hiring, and compensation.
