The program provides temporary paid jobs related to recovery from the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires in Lahaina and Kula on August 8, 2023.
In early December, it was announced that the Maui NDWG funds were running short. The state DLIR on Thursday confirmed sufficient funding for the duration of the program through Sept. 30, 2025.
The temporary jobs program has a limit of about 1 year of work per participant. Those who work their full term may be able to extend their employment period through a county-funded program. One person per host site has been allocated.
Both the Maui NDWG and the county-funded extension end on Sept. 30, 2025. At the conclusion of the program, participants will work with MEO, Employers Options and the state Workforce Development Division on long-term job placement. Those unable to secure long-term employment may be eligible for unemployment compensation.
“MEO is pleased that the Maui NDWG funding issue has been resolved and that workers will be able to work to their full terms,” said MEO CEO Debbie Cabebe. “We are happy that host sites will be able to continue their important work and that their workers will continue their employment with a goal toward securing long-term jobs.”
