Molokai Financial Literacy Class

MEDIA ANNOUCEMENT  April 28, 2015

Maui Economic Opportunity Business Development Center (MEO BDC) and Molokai High School’s Business Core Class collaborate to help students understand business tactics.

Hoolehua, HI – Maui Economic Opportunity Business Development Center (MEO BDC) spent many hours at MHS with students in the Business Core Class and their teacher, Kai Sawyer. Since November 2014, the kids were taught the Basics on Business Planning combined with Financial Literacy.  MEO BDC used the Core Four Business Planning Course and the Kahua Waiwai Curriculum to put the understanding in motion.

One student shared that this learning experience will help him to understand what goes on in the mind of business owners. Another student stated  “Now I know why they charge so much. They need to include all expenses of getting our ‘needs and wants’ to us”.

Instructor Kuulei Arce (Loan Fund Manager at MEO BDC) spent one period per week since last November with a nice mix of seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen at Molokai High School.  She collaborated with Kai Sawyer (Business Core Class teacher and CTE Coordinator), teaching them the importance of building a business plan as well as simple Financial Literacy. The curriculum assisted with learning success planning, market planning, cash flow planning and operations planning. The financial literacy portion talked about building and maintaining credit, budgeting, supporting our economy and much more.

The students were presented with Certificates of Completion for Basic Business Planning and Basic Financial Literacy on April 23, 2015.

The time to teach youth about Financial Literacy is before they graduate from High School and get  into the “real” world.  If you know of a group of juniors and seniors who would like to learn about Financial Literacy please give Kuulei Arce a call at 553-3270.

MEO BDC’s work is part of a larger collaborative effort organized by the local nonprofit, Hawaiian Community Assets, to implement and deliver youth financial education programs statewide.  Partners in this collaborative include:

● (Maui) The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, Neighborhood Place Wailuku, Na Pua Noeau, Kamehameha Schools, Paia Youth Center, Hui Waa Kaulua, Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center, Focus Maui Nui – Youth Alliance.
